Sept 13-14, 2008 - AQHA Phillipi, WV Circuit Week 1
Congratulations Birdie! First under both judges in her lunge line class. There were only two entries but the other horse was professionally trained and owned since birth whereas we only got Birdie in July and had to hurry to get her up to speed, even just learning to tie and lunge at all. Birdie also set her feet in her halter class!!!! She is such a good baby. This was her second time away from her and her biggest trip by far (her first trip off the farm was only 30 minutes). Jake and Neko also had a good weekend and brought home points. It rained super hard on the way down, we actually only drove about 30 miles an hour several times because we couldn't see to drive, but then the weather turned into record highs (90 degrees on Sunday). Neko rode in the schooling warm up over fences on Saturday night (see photos) but the jumps are still a little too high for her to show at AQHA yet. If she wouldn't have missed so much time this year, she'd have done the working hunter by now. Jake had great over fences classes and should win a couple of circuit awards also. Next week is 'girls only' as only Neko and Birdie will be going to the futurity. Neko doesn't get to ride in classes when Jake is running for all arounds so this show at Winfield will be Neko's turn to shine. Had another great weekend thanks to Michael, Debbie, Tiffany, Madison, Nick, John, Darrin and many others. Our condolences to the Prescott family on the loss of their husband, father and brother two weeks ago. We would do anything for them to help them through, but they are fighters and I am sure will get through it in time, but we meant what we said when we said we'd help any way we could. I am sure it was a tough weekend for them. PS - Jeff, thanks again for the coaching advice! Next week is the futurity in Winfield for Neko and Birdie and then back to Phillipi to finish out the circuit. After that, its Congress and then some reining and hunter shows over the winter!
Neko during hunter over fences schooling and at left waiting for the jumps to be set. Above: take off/landing and on course.
Left: Birdie walking in the warm up pen before her halter class. Right: Birdie won her halter class and then went in for grand/reserve -- Birdie is a big yearling, but look at the horse in front of her in grand/reserve!! That horse won grand champion. I just love that picture - I could barely see Birdie behind that big horse! And look at Birdie's feet - she set them All By Herself!!! No Hands Mom!!
Here is a picture of Jake from the show also, placing in Western Pleasure, Horsemanship, eq, trail and winning showmanship, NA hack, amateur hack, and second in open hack. Jake didn't show over fences today. Too hot and we were too tired!! He was just throwing himself over because he was tired so we passed on the courses this time.
Here is Birdie taking a nap after winning her lunge line class......
can't believe its been two years since Neko won her futurity and then had to take a nap...seems like yesterday!

Congratulations Birdie and Corinne! 2008 Mountain State Hunter Classic Lunge Line Futurity Champion - West Virginia Quarter Horse Association, Winfield, WV 9/20/08
NWV Quarter Horse Association Fall Circuit - September 2008 Congratulations! SEVEN Circuit championships - each of our horses at least won one!!!! Neko missed the beginning of the year with her injury, but is still only one show away from her ROM in amateur showmanship! Click here for details
Congratulations - Jake & Corinne Year End All Around Champions NWVQHA Jake had a great year - was also the Spring Fling Circuit Champion All Around and won many classes. He won circuits for the Fall Circuit (they didn't offer an all around or he would have won that one also). Its a nice place to show - they have a covered pen so weather doesn't matter, there is always enough people for points (they get class splits) and the people are a lot of fun and very helpful. Even going into classes when things are so competitive, you often have the other entries' grooms pulling tail braids or brushing off dusty boots for each other, its a nice place to show. Jake pointed at every show, including the Spring Breakout in Virginia with all the world champions. He and Neko have been consistent from NJ, VA, OH, WV, PA. We want to try Michigan and New York next year also. Depending on work schedules, the Harrington, DE show might also be fun. Maybe Brenda and Jake can show as all around team and compete with Corinne and Neko! That would be a lot of fun, but the most important thing is to get Birdie experience before her Congress 2 year old class. She may not place there,we know that is a huge goal, but our goal is that she will definitely look like she belongs! And she will also get to go in showmanship next year.
Corinne bought Jake as a yearling for $2500 and trained him herself from the day of his first ride eight years ago. Not Bad, Corinne. Not Bad at all.
Neko won the reserve amateur showmanship year end and even with missed shows, still made top 5 in her hunter class. Jake I think will finish 6th in the HUS standings for year end, BUT Corinne rode him when Neko couldn't ride and Brenda even rode him the beginning of the year so the fact that they both placed high with limited showing speaks a lot. See the class standings here (if the year ends aren't updated yet, they will be shortly) but you can also see the Circuit Award Listings.) (The header page says 2007 but it isn't, its 2008). I'll list the rest of Jake's classes as soon as they are posted and final. NWVQHA Points Standings
Congress and there is a slight possibility of the Turkey Circuit being our last AQHA shows for 2008. (We're still deciding about Turkey Circuit and depends on how much time away from work we have left). We've had a great year and learned a lot. Neko is learning flying changes now and has worked ten minutes over fences her last two rides this past week. She is also working on her western so she can be the all around horse next year. We forgot how much fun having a baby was since Neko was our last baby four years ago, so now that Corinne will be breaking Birdie this winter, we are getting the itch for another baby. We have to decide what we are going to do. We have to board so three is the limit so one would have to go. If someone wanted to trade Neko for an equal value baby or even a slightly less value baby and then promise us her first baby, that would be something to discuss. Neko's not a halter horse by any means, but she obviously goes nice enough that she places every time. They'd get a horse they could continue showing and we'd get a baby to show. We have a friend who would take Neko home in a heartbeat for that but they only show a couple of local shows and they'd probably only do showmanship if anything at all, which is OK I guess. Its just hard to let her go. She has come from the scrawny ugly duckling to the sweet bat my eyelashes I'll try 110% for you girl she has grown into. When Jake was first learning to jump, we had to only do a couple and then quit because he is a know it all and gets anxious and thinks if he does something once or twice, he will do if for you. The nice thing about Neko is she was actually working her western on the flat and then Corinne popped over the jump a couple of times and right back to western on the flat. She is more 'in the moment' working on what you are doing right now where Jake sees a cone in the arena and the whole time he is working he has one eye on that cone trying to figure out if he is going to play games or horsemanship or what. Its great in a way because he is very smart so to keep him fresh, you just set something out for him to think about even if you never touch it. Of course then Corinne would be upset that she didn't get to have a full season over fences with Neko! And she at least wants that one more show to get Neko's ROM. Or if Jake could be leased by someone we could trust. So far the right person hasn't talked to us but even if we don't do that, Jake surely deserves a little time off to just trail ride and play with cows.
